My cancer journey started in October of 1994.
I had only been remarried for 6 weeks when breast cancer was found. That was such devastating news. It was on a routine check-up that my doctor found an oval lump on a ridge of fibro cystic tissue in my left breast.. From there, things happened quite fast:: needle biopsies, surgery to do a partial mastectomy, followed by chemo therapy and radiation.
The loss of my hair and a changed body image was rather shocking.
Through the years I have had many other health challenges related to my cancer treatments. Also, early cancer detection caught it in my thyroid and uterus. My strong faith in the Lord has carried me through all the ups and downs of my journey.
The verse that is my favorite from the Bible that I referred to a lot through these difficulties is from the book of Joshua, Chapter 1, verse 9. "Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go." He has been with me and he also has blessed me with a hope and a desire to reach out and help others who are going through similar situations.
About 4 years ago, I formed the JOY Foundation (Just One You), and through a journal that I put together, I have been able to aid others in their own journeys.
Now my non-profit foundation is linking with Cancer COMFORT Ministry and we, together, are “sharing the care” to meet the needs of our communities; helping others, so that they will not feel isolated and alone. The right encouragement can be such a boost!
I am grateful to Steven Curtis Chapman for his song, "This is the Great Adventure" which inspired me to get up and “look up” when I was at my lowest emotional point.
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
